On Monday the 25th February Curtain Up Productions are delighted to be presenting their play, “84 Charing Cross Rd.” as the first Supper Theatre evening in the Live Lounge at La Sala Puerto Banús.
The play has been put together by local faces Margaret and David Dunckley and June and Miles Rendle.
The evening will start at 7pm and is priced at just 35€ per person and includes a welcome glass of cava, sharing platter, main course and ½ a bottle of wine and water per person.
The title signifies the address of a bookseller in London. In 1949 Helene Hanff, a struggling New York writer, began a correspondence which lasted for twenty years. From her very first letter her spirit bounces off the page with warmth and wit, quickly becomes intoxicating. When, in contrast, the first formal reply from Frank Doel arrives, bound by the restraints of period, class, and professionalism she remains deliciously herself in response, and gradually his cool reserve melts.
The story mirrors the social changes that occurred during the time, in 1949 British food was still rationed, and foreign travel was very limited. To make a personal phone call to another continent was almost impossible.
It is a play full of enchantment and charm, funny, poignant, warm, and compassionate. It has since been turned into a highly successful film starring Anthony Hopkins and Anne Bancroft, which is currently available on Netflix.
Places to this event are limited and early booking is recommended.
The Live Lounge at La Sala Puerto Banús is the room where the stage truly comes alive! Past performances have includes tribute shows from the likes of The Jersey Boys, Whitney Houston and Adele along with regular comedy evenings.
